Slovak prosecutors have terrorism charges against the attacker of Prime Minister Fico

Slovak prosecutors have presented terrorism charges against the attacker who shot and seriously injured Prime Minister Robert Fico last year, the prosecutor’s office said Monday.

The suspect, who was 71 years old at the time of the incident last May, shot Fico four times at a short distance in the abdomen. Fico, 60, four times Prime Minister, then recovered and returned to work months later.

The attacker, identified by prosecutors as Juraj C., said he intended to damage, not kill Fico, and disagreed with his policies, the documents of the Court published last year are shown.

The attack deepened the pronounced political division in the country of Central Europe, with Fico and its international leftist government criticizing its liberal opposition for removing tensions.

However, critics have worried about FICO’s policies since he took power in 2023, including changes in criminal codes, a renewal of the public broadcaster and the end of military aid of Slovakia for Ukraine while fighting a Russian invasion.

Research on the attack concluded last month. Reuters
