Russian military intelligence linked to Ikea’s fire, says Lithuania prosecutor

Vilnius – Russia’s military intelligence was behind a fire attack in an Ikea store in Vilna in May last year, and a suspect in the case is in custody in Poland along with others linked to similar crimes, a Lithuanian prosecutor said Monday.

Western officials say that sabotage incidents have shot in Europe in recent years, with alleged Russian paid agents that are believed to be behind a variety of crimes. Russia has regularly denied any participation.

Lithuania’s investigation had shown that Ikea’s fire was linked to Russia through a long chain of intermediaries, said Arturas Urbelis, a prosecutor from the Lithuanian General Prosecutor’s Office.

“This is connected to military intelligence, with security services,” Urbelis told reporters.

It is believed that the attack was carried out by two Ukrainian citizens, one of whom less realized, he said, added that he was being treated as a case of terrorism.

The other suspect was arrested in Lithuania shortly after the crime, he said. Reuters
