Dangerous marine and coastal conditions expected in St. Thomas, St. John and Puerto Rico

The National Meteorological Service in San Juan has issued multiple climatic notices due to hazardous marine and coastal conditions that affect the waters of the Atlantic, the northern coast of Puerto Rico, Culebra, St. Thomas and St. John. A northwest long -standing swell is promoting these conditions, which are expected to create dangerous waves, strong hangover currents and dangerous seas throughout the day.

For marine risks, a small craft notice is in force for the waters of the Atlantic in the high seas until 6:00 pm tonight. Mariners are advised to have caution as the agitated seas represent a significant risk for small ships.

For coastal risks, the NWS has issued two key alerts:

  • High risk of residence currents: coastal areas along the north coast of Puerto Rico, Culebra, St. Thomas and St. John will experience Dangerous Breaks until Thursday night. These currents represent a serious threat, even for experienced swimmers. The rupture waves will vary from 6 to 7 feet in Culebra, St. Thomas and St. John, with higher occasional waves. Along the north coast of Puerto Rico, the waves breaking can reach up to 10 feet.

  • Surf High Notice: This notice is still valid for the north coast of Puerto Rico until 6:00 pm AST tonight due to large waves of up to 10 feet.

Dangers and potential impacts

  • Notice of small crafts: the agitated seas will raise challenges for small ships, making navigation dangerous. Mariners must remain cautious and verify the updates before leaving.

  • High RIP current risk: Stroke strong currents could remove swimmers from the coast, creating potentially mortal conditions. Spectators are advised to avoid swimming in affected areas and follow local warnings.

  • Surf high warning: great waves that crash against jokes and rock coasts can drag people and pets into the ocean. The rude surf can knock down individuals, which causes serious injuries. In addition, the localized erosion of the beach and dunes, the dangerous swimming conditions and the minor coastal floods, with the potential for damage to the structures in front of the beach can occur.

Residents and visitors are urged to stay updated on marine conditions and risk risks by verifying the perspective of the experimental graphic danger climate of the National Meteorological Service:
