Death toll rises to 6 in attack on German Christmas market

BERLIN — The number of dead in the attack at a Christmas market in the German city of Magdeburg last month rose to six when a woman succumbed to her injuries, prosecutors said Monday.

Prosecutors in Naumburg said the 52-year-old woman died in a hospital, the German news agency dpa reported. Authorities have said that the other deceased were four women, ages 45, 52, 67 and 75, and a 9-year-old child.

More than 200 people were injured in the December 20 attack.

The authorities have identified the suspectwho was detained on Friday afternoon immediately after driving a rented car through a busy market, being a Saudi doctor who arrived in Germany in 2006 and had obtained permanent residency.

They have said that he does not fit the usual profile of perpetrators of extremist attacks. The man described himself as a former Muslim who is very critical of Islam and on social media expressed his support for the far right.
