The community mourns the death of father and daughter in a plane crash in Fullerton

A community is in mourning after a tragic plane crash claimed the lives of a beloved teenage athlete and her father.

On Saturday, emotional tributes occurred at Huntington Beach High School. This is where Kelly Reid, 16, attended, and where she also played multiple sports.

She was described as a dear teammate, a great friend and an extraordinary person in every way, and her father was remembered as her greatest support.

It was a moving tribute to a young life too short.

A video posted on social media shows Kelly Reid playing flag football. While this post from the Huntington Beach High School girls’ soccer program describes Kelly as an incredible, genuine and kind girl with a passion for life, the tribute says the number 6 was appropriate for the college player.

“The number 6 symbolizes love, creating harmony and caring for others. I can’t think of a better way to describe our special number 6. Kelly was a natural caregiver and always put others first. She will be missed deeply. Her father was in every game and is always very proud of his daughter,” the team wrote on social media.

Kelly and her father, Pascal Reed, died when the small plane they were traveling in crashed into a Fullerton warehouse Thursday afternoon. The explosion injured 19 people who worked in the building.

Police said the plane, a Vans RV-10 experimental plane, crashed into the roof of a furniture manufacturing building while approaching the runway. Then it caught fire, sending large plumes of smoke into the air, visible from miles away.

The same security camera near Fullerton Municipal Airport captured another plane crash in November, injuring two people on board.

According to LinkedIn, Pascal worked on the development of experimental aircraft. Records show he was the registered owner of the four-person plane, which was built in 2011.

Tributes to the father and daughter continue to flood social media as heartbroken friends and family try to process the tragedy.

“Words can’t describe how much my heart hurts right now. I can’t believe the sweetest soul is truly gone. Your smile and laugh were so contagious and made me look forward to every practice and game. I’m very lucky to have met you and feel especially blessed to have called you my teammate and friend. “I find peace in knowing that you and your dad are in a better place, shining on us all,” one loved one wrote.

It is still unclear what caused that plane to crash. A preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board is expected to be released in about two weeks, but the final report could take up to 18 months.
