Omer Riza: Cardiff City coach criticizes referee Durkin for Robinson’s red card

Cardiff City manager Omer Riza believes James Durkin was intimidated by his promotion from fourth official to referee when he sent off Callum Robinson against Coventry City.

Republic of Ireland striker Robinson was sent off early in the second half of the 1-1 draw on New Year’s Day after hitting Bobby Thomas with his elbow as they struggled to head home.

Cardiff players, coaches and fans were furious at the decision by Durkin, who had started the match as fourth official but had to replace the injured referee Geoff Eltringham during the first half.

Riza said the Bluebirds will appeal the red card of Robinson, who is their top scorer this season with eight goals.

“If anyone thinks it’s a red card, then I’m a monkey’s uncle,” Riza said.

“The arm is raised, he caught it, yellow card, yes. There is no malice whatsoever. With all due respect to the referee, it is his first championship match.

“Maybe the moment came and he wanted to make an important decision and it was the wrong one. It’s something we have to deal with.”

The draw left Cardiff second from the bottom of the Championship table, one point from safety.

A red card for violent conduct would normally carry a three-match suspension, so the Bluebirds hope Robinson’s dismissal will be overturned.

The former Sheffield United striker had scored three goals in his previous two appearances, including a brace during last Sunday’s win over Watford, Cardiff’s first win in 10 attempts.

“I spoke to the referees and told them what I told you (the media). I’m not hiding anything. I spoke honestly and respectfully,” Riza added.

“The referee thought he had seen it, when he looks back I think he will see it differently. I hope it is overturned. I would like to appeal.”
