Did you distract McLaren’s instruction ‘Position’ for Oscar Piasstri?

Oscar Piastri cut the leadership of Lando Norris, but made a mistake shortly after receiving instructions to keep the position behind his teammate.

The McLarens led the first and second on the track during the Australian Grand Prix, when Oscar Piasstri received an order to maintain a position behind Lando Norris.

Zak Brown directs the instruction of Oscar Piastri

While Oscar Piastri initially lost the initiative of Lando Norris in the opening return when Max Verstappen surpassed the Australian, Piasstri began to compensate him in the middle part of the race after anticipating Verstappen when the Red Bull driver made an error in his intermediate overwhelmed tires.

Pastri slow but surely began cutting Norris’s leadership, and had gotten into the range of his teammate’s DRs when his career engineer gave him a radio instruction to maintain a position behind Norris, apparently disagree with the messaging prior to the race that the two pilots would be free to compete with each other.

Piastri accepted the message, pointing out that “it was faster” than Norris, but remained firm behind his teammate without attacking while the couple made its way through some markers traffic. Piastri’s pending attack vanished when he made an error in the turn and had to go back to the accelerator to replace the car, a similar error by Fernando Alonso only a few minutes later resulted in a security intervention.

Talking with Sky f1 After the checkered flag, McLaren CEO Zak Brown was asked if he felt that Piastri’s rhythm had been discouraged by the instructions to keep the station.

“I don’t think it had anything to do with that,” he said, before explaining that the retention position instruction had only been temporary while the two cars crossed traffic.

“We, Andrea and I on the wall of the well, actually freed him to go running, and we only wanted to make sure to clear the traffic.

“So that was a wait for a moment, and then it seemed that he dropped a wheel and then backed up some gap.

“But I think they were pressing very hard in very complicated conditions.”

Zak Brown: I felt terrible for Oscar Piastri

Piastri’s career collapsed shortly after the security car, since both he and Norris left the final sector when they met the first wet asphalt when the rain began to fall in Albert Park.

While Norris managed to regroup and return to the track without losing the position, Piastri slipped into the grass and stuck, recovered to finally finish ninth.

“I feel terrible for Oscar. He drove such a brilliant race and both appeared with that rain at the same time, ”said Brown.

“Lando could pick it up. For Oscar, a little more complicated, and led very well to return to P9 but (a) impressive team effort in an exciting race. “

With McLaren breaking away from Verstappen in stable drying conditions through the first season, Brown hastened to point out that a swallow does not make a summer.

“It looked good, but, as we know, that’s a track, a race. Let’s see what happens in China, ”he said.

“But definitely, we are starting the season very strong. But we saw, last year, Max won the first six, seven races (sic), whatever, and then had a little drought. So I think we just have to continue doing what we are doing. “

With Norris to resist the pressure applied by Verstappen to obtain victory and lead the pilot championship, Brown said it had been a difficult day to discover the best tire option for any given time.

“Amazing Drive, the team called a perfect strategy in very difficult conditions,” he said.

“It was really hard due to the rain. We continue to think that I was going to arrive, it may not come. How bad will it be? How long will it happen?

“We just had to react to the circumstances. Then the team did a great job. All back in McLaren, all men and women, built an adequate career. ”
