The Senator of Kisii, Richard Onyonka, has written an urgent appeal to President William Ruto, asking the diplomatic intervention to save a Kenyan sentenced to death in Vietnam.

In his letter dated March 14, Onyonka appeals to Ruto to ensure clemency and repatriation for Margaret Nduta Macharia.

Kenya, 37, was sentenced to death in Vietnam for drug trafficking charges and should be executed on Sunday.

It was sentenced by the court of the city of Ho Chi Minh to death by traffic of more than 2 kg of drugs through the airport Tan Nhat.

In the open letter, the Kisii senator urged Kenya’s government to take immediate measures to safeguard the fundamental rights of NDUTA, emphasizing the need for humanitarian intervention.

While recognizing the judicial sovereignty of Vietnam, Onyonka called on President Routo to involve the Vietnamese government, the United Nations and international human rights organizations to negotiate a more indulgent sentence and a possible transfer from NDUTA to Kenya.

“This distressing development demands urgent diplomatic intervention to safeguard its fundamental rights and explore the possibility of clemency and repatriation,” Onyonka wrote.

The senator described three key options, including a clemency plea to travel the death sentence to life imprisonment or an alternative penalty.

Onyonka also requested diplomatic negotiations for repatriation to Kenya to comply with his sentence under local laws.

He also requested commitment to international human rights organizations to support Kenya’s efforts to ensure his fair treatment.

Kenya has historically advocated justice and human treatment of its citizens abroad, said Onyonka, urging the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to take immediate measures.

Copies of the letter were also sent to the Secretary of the Cabinet for Foreign Affairs, Musalia Mudavadi, the chief of cabinet of the president’s office, Felix Koskei, and the United Nations Mission in Kenya.

Onyonka expressed his confidence in the leadership of President Routo to ensure a diplomatic resolution and save Nduta’s life.

“The president should already have made a personal effort in his ability to initiate diplomatic negotiations with Vietnam’s leadership on an issue involving a Kenyan citizen,” said Ossonka.

Deputy East East of Packasi, Babu Owino, also asked President Ruto to intervene and save Nduta’s life.

Main Secretary of Foreign Affairs Korir Sing’oei The case of Nduta is complex and difficult “but we are doing everything at our disposal to ensure respite for our national.”
