Only 1 teenager will be accused of the murder of the driver of Marta’s bus, says the Da office

An Dekalb County judge ruled on Wednesday that the case against a 16 -year -old boy accused of fatally shooting a Marta bus driver earlier this year.

During a preliminary hearing, the judge of the magistrate court Claire Jason determined that there was enough evidence to advance with positions of murder for serious crime and aggravated assault against the adolescent, whose name has not been released due to his age.

Fatal shot at Decatur Station

What we know:

According to the researchers, the shooting occurred on the night of January 3, 2025 at Decatur Marta station. The authorities said three children, two 16 -year -old young people and a 14 -year -old boy, were involved in a discussion with the bus driver of Marta, Leroy Ramos, 47. The dispute became a physical altercation after all parts left the bus.

During the altercation, one of the 16 -year -olds supposedly took a gun and shot multiple shots, hitting and killing Ramos.

After an exhaustive investigation, the Dekalb County District Prosecutor’s Office determined that the other two teenagers involved in the argument did not participate in the shooting. As a result, the charges against him have been dismissed.

Next steps in the case

What follows?

Prosecutors have not yet decided if the alleged shooter will be tried as minor or as an adult in the Superior Court. The case is currently assigned to the SB440 unit of the district prosecutor, which manages cases that involve youth suspects that can be judged as adults under Georgia’s law.

The Senate bill 440, promulgated in 1994, allows children under 13 and 17 years to be tried as adults for serious crimes, including murder, voluntary homicide and certain violent crimes that involve firearms.
