(Statehouse) – More than half of Indiana’s 92 counties have less than one lawyer for every 1,000 residents. There is a bill that legislators are reviewing in the Statehouse to try to address that.

State representative Chris Jeter of Fishers wrote the bill. He says he would provide additional funds throughout the State for attached prosecutors.

“The bill of the House of Representatives 1006 makes a unique generation investment in the State Criminal Justice System. The bill would support the law and order by reimburseing qualified and participants counties up to 50% of the salary packages and benefits of their attached prosecutors. This bill will guarantee that the courts of Indiana and the criminal justice system continue to function properly, keep the best talent and protect the public safety of all Hoosiers, ”said Jeter.

One of the co -authors of the bill is the state representative Andrew Ireland of Indianapolis. He says he would help retain prosecutors’ lawyers and support more competitive wages through the creation of the Prosecutor’s Office that the Indian Prosecutor’s Office could use to reimburse the rated counties up to 50% for the costs of the services of the Prosecutor’s Office and Public Defense.

“Our prosecutors play a fundamental role in the protection of our communities, maintaining violent criminals outside the streets and providing justice to the victims of crimes. We need to ensure that these officials are adequately compensated by defending the law and order, ”said Ireland.

The bill would also create a prosecutor’s review board to examine prosecutors who refuse to process criminal laws. If the Board considers that a non -compliant prosecutor, the Council of Prosecutors of the Prosecutors of Indiana would retain the funds.

The bill approved the Chamber and is being reviewed by the Senate.
