About the conference

The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) 2023, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) 2023 have ushered in significant reforms in India’s Criminal Justice System, Replace the IP of 1860, CRPC of 1974, and Indian Evidence Act of 1872, respectively. These new laws introduce key changes, such as a change towards the participation of technological procedures, the most strict procedure deadlines and forensic investigations, and a renewed approach to justice and reform. However, although these laws establish high standards for criminal award, their practical implementation remains challenging, which requires a balance between legal ideals and terrestrial realities.

Since its application in July 2024, a crucial need has emerged to critically examine the functioning and implementation of these laws. The conference aims to bring together judges, defenders, prosecutors, police officers, academics and students to discuss the effectiveness of these reforms, identify the challenges for effective implementation and recommend policies reforms based on the practical experiences of key interested parties. The conference aims to provide valuable information to close the gap between the legislative intention and the implementation in the soil.

The discussions at the conference will focus on contrasts between ancient and new criminal laws, the practical difficulties faced by different stakeholders and harmonize legal principles with procedural realities.

By promoting critical commitment and informed debate, this conference seeks to ensure that the implementation of these laws is effective and fair, ultimately, contributes to a more solid and equitable criminal justice system.
