Polam Kopitiam food poisoning deaths in Taiwan: Victims families to receive record payments from the government

Taipei (The Straits Times/ANN): The families of six people who died of food poisoning after dinner in a restaurant in Malaysia in Taiwan will receive a total sum of NT $ 10.8 million (S $ 436,944 – RM1.45Mil) in government compensation, the Taiwanese media reported.

The six victims fell seriously ill and died after eating the flat rice of Polam Kopitiam at the Xinyi departure from the restaurant chain in Taipei between March 19 and 24 in 2024.

There were three men and three women between 39 and 66, one of whom was a 40 -year -old Malaysia man.

The greatest of them, Mr. Yang, was admitted to the hospital for diarrhea and chest oppression after eating fried flat noodles in the restaurant. Later he died due to multiple organic insufficiency.

Another victim, Mr. LV, 39, received emergency treatment in a hospital on March 23, 2024, for diarrhea and vomiting, a day after his fried noodle food and Pandan in Polam Kopitiam. He died of acute renal failure.

Other twenty -seven people also got sick after dinner at the exit.

The investigations point to inappropriate storage and the mismanagement of the noodles, which were maintained at room temperature, although they were supposed to cool.

Five people, the restaurant owner, the branch manager, two chefs and a restaurant intern, have been accused of negligent homicide.

The families of the six dead diners requested the Taipei District Prosecutor’s Office for government compensation under the Law on the Rights of Victims of Crime, China Times reported.

NT $ 1.8 million were awarded this week for each family, or NT $ 10.8 million in total.

This is the highest payment ever granted for a food security case, according to China Times.
