The W.VA. Vote to intervene in Mingo County Schools

Mingo County, W.VA. (WSAZ) – The West Virginia Education Board (WBVE) will intervene in the Mingo County schools to supervise concerns about students’ education, according to a statement issued Wednesday by the WVBE.

The members of the State Board unanimously voted to declare “an immediate intervention of the Mingo County schools.” The agency said it happened after “significant findings” of a review, including concerns that “the education and performance of the students are committed to the political conflict within the county.”

Wednesday’s vote occurred after Wvbe’s monthly meeting in Charleston.

According to the statement, “the action also requires the participation of the WVDE in the hiring of the next County Superintendent. The County Board terminated the extension of the four -year contract of the current superintendent shortly after last year’s general elections. “

In addition, “the intervention limits the authority of the County Board in school operations and requires that the majority of the rules elaboration authority be delegated to Superintendent Blatt or its designated. The action also requires the participation of the WVDE in the hiring of the next County Superintendent.

The WVDE also intervened in the Mingo County schools during the previous two decades, and the control was returned to Mingo County in 2014 after nine years of intervention.

State education officials also announced a new portal of evaluations results where parents and tutors can track the progress of third -to -eighth grade students.

“WVDE expects this to allow families and educators to describe resources that support students’ learning during summer holidays,” said the agency in the statement.

In addition, “students in grades 5 and 8 will be able to see their results of the science of WVGSA, and the portal will also have previous exams to compare.”

The state test window is from May 7 to 23, and families can also navigate to the portal from the WVDE evaluation website after April 7, according to WVDE.

During Wednesday’s meeting, the Superintendent of WVDE Michele L. Blatt also recognized the arduous work of the school districts in Mingo County that were affected by the floods last month.
