Former Filipino President Rodrigo Duterte was arrested by the Police at the Manila International Airport by order of the International Criminal Court in relation to a case of crime against humanity presented against him.
Manila, the Philippines (AP) – The former president of the Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte, was arrested by the Police at the Manila International Airport on Tuesday by order of the International Criminal Court in relation to a case of crime against humanity presented against him, said the Filipino government.
Duterte was arrested after arriving of Hong Kong And the police arrested him by order of the ICC, who has been investigating the mass murders that occurred under the mortal repression of the former president against illegal drugs, said President Ferdinand Marcos’s office in a statement.
“Upon arrival, the Attorney General fulfilled the notification of the ICC for an arrest warrant against the former president for the crime of crime against humanity,” the government statement. “Now it is in custody of the authorities.”
The surprise arrest caused a shock at the airport, where the lawyers and attendees of Duterte protested aloud who, together with a doctor and lawyers, were prevented from approaching him after they took him in police custody. “This is a violation of its constitutional right,” Gon Bong Go, a near Duterte ally. He said to journalists.
The Manila Office of the International Police received an official copy of the arrest order of the Global Court, the Government said.
It was not clear immediately where Duterte was taken by the police. The Government said that the former 79 -year -old leader had good health and was examined by government doctors.
The ICC began investigating drug murders under Duterte since November 1, 2011, when he was still mayor of the city of southern Davao, until March 16, 2019, as possible crimes against humanity. Duterte retired Philippines in 2019 of the Rome Statute in a movement, according to human rights activists, aimed to escape responsibility.
The Duterte administration moved to suspend the investigation of the global court at the end of 2021 by arguing that the Philippine authorities were already investigating the same accusations, arguing that the CPI, a last resort court, had no jurisdiction.
The CPI appeals judges ruled in 2023, the investigation could be resumed and reject the objections of the Duterte administration. Based in The Hague, the Netherlands, the CPI can intervene when countries are not willing or cannot process suspects in the most atrocious international crimes, including genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who happened to Duterte in 2022 and became entangled in a bitter political dispute with the former president, decided not to join the global court. But Marcos’s administration has said that it would cooperate if the CPI asks the International Police to put Duterte through a so -called red warning, a request for agencies for the application of the law throughout the world to temporarily locate and arrest a suspect of the crime.
