Injury in Saskatchewan’s workplace, mortality rates decreased by 2024: WCB

The rates of injury and mortality in the workplace of Saskatchewan fell in 2024.

According to the data of the Saskatchewan Workers Compensation Board, the rate of injuries in the workplace of the province of 3.91 per 100 workers in 2024 established a new historical minimum for the province, falling for the second consecutive year.

The 2024 injury rate represents a 1.01 percent decrease over the rate of 2023 of 3.95 lesions per 100 workers.

Saskatchewan saw 27 deaths in the workplace last year, the Board reported, which represents a fall of seven percent of the 29 deaths at work sites in 2023 and the lowest rate that the province has seen since 2017.

Ten of those deaths were due to diseases related to occupation, and the remaining 17 were due to “traumatic incidents”, including car accidents, drowning and contact with mechanical equipment.

Gord Dobrowolsky, president of the Compensation Board, said that the decrease in the rate of injuries in the workplace represents the results of hard work by employers, employees, security associations and leaders throughout Saskatchewan.

“Security begins with us in each job, in each shift,” said Dobrowolsky in a statement.

“It is our combined efforts that continue to reduce injury rates. While these numbers are directed in the right direction, even an injury is too much. ”

For the fifth consecutive year, 90 percent of the workplaces of the province did not see deaths or injuries, the Board reported. The rate of injury due to Saskatchewan’s time loss also fell in 2024, falling 3.37 percent to 1.72 per 100 workers.

“Applaud the collaboration throughout the province focusing on reducing the rates of injury in the workplace,” said Phillip Germain, CEO of the Workers Compensation Board.

“Our province leads the country in many ways, but when it comes to security in the workplace, we still have a way to go before being number one in the safety of the workplace in Canada. We are committed to guaranteeing safer workplaces in our province. While safe workplaces are good for business, the most important part of each job is for each worker to return home safely. “
