The South Korean army has said that joint drills are aimed at strengthening the preparation of the alliance for threats such as North Korea.

“This is a dangerous provocative act of leading the acute situation in the Korean Peninsula, which can trigger a physical conflict between the two parts by means of a single accidental shot, to the extreme point,” said the North Korean Foreign Ministry, according to the media of the KCNA state media.

The exercises will damage the security of the United States, the ministry added.

Lee Young-SU, head of the South Korean Air Force, bowed in apology on Monday for the “unprecedented” accident last week in which two planes bombarded the village error.

“It was an accident that should never have happened and should never happen again,” Lee told reporters.

A pilot on an plane was pressed for time and did not verify the target coordinates twice, while another pilot on the other plane continued and dropped bombs without noticing the incorrect coordinates, said a military official of South Korea, citing the provisional results of the military investigation.

The Ministry of Defense was not immediately available to comment.

The area reached by the accidental bombardment in Pocheon, which is about 40 km to the northeast of Seoul, was out of a training area near the border with North Korea.

Residents in the area have long complained about the alteration and the risks from the exercises.
