An ocular witness told the Herald He had returned from New Plymouth when at least three ambulances and a fire truck flew with his car to the accident place.

“On our way down, we had seen the Taranaki rescue helicopter. We thought they were going to go down, but we didn’t realize that it would land in front of us, ”he said.

“We were the first car to be arrested. The guy reached the window and said we could be a little wait.

“I heard the boy leave the helicopter and say that I didn’t know how long we were going to be, so I thought we could turn around.”
