Monterey County inmate obtains 25 years of life for sexual assault on the nurse

A state inmate received an additional mandate of 25 years to life for sexually assaulting a prison nurse, prosecutors said on Friday.

Tyrone Owens, 41, walked in a patio in the state prison of the Salinas Valley on March 23, 2023, when she approached a licensed vocational nurse asking “help,” prosecutors said.

When she told her how to get help, Owens told her that she needed “sexual help,” he ran after her, grabbed her and tried to put her hand out of her pants, prosecutors said.

The nurse finally freed Owens, and the correctional officers came to their aid.

Owens was sentenced as a third “strike” criminal under the law of three California attacks that increases prison time for repeated criminals, said the district prosecutor’s office in a press release.

At the time of the incident, Owens fulfilled a 17 -year prison sentence, so prosecutors called “similar conduct.”

The additional term will not begin until Owens has fulfilled its previous mandate, which began in 2019, prosecutors said.
