The association of the Diocesan Catholic clergy of Mzuzu has asked President Laazarus Chakwera to intervene in the land argument between the Malawi Defense Force (MDF) and the people of Kasasire.
At least 800 people have been evicted from Kasasire, an area covered by the Nkhata Bay district, the northeast of Mzimba and part of Runctphi East.
Speaking during a press conference today in Mzuzu, president of the association, Father Mark Mkandawire said they have been in conversations with the presidency to meet on the matter.
He said: “These people have no refuge or food, they lack basic hygiene needs. What can a poor person do to obtain justice?
“The discussions are ongoing with the presidency, and we hope that, since he is here in the north, he can find time to see the suffering of the people of Kasasire.”
Felix Manda, who coordinates the Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) said that Kasasire’s people deserve human compensation and dignity.
