The Ukrainian attack against Turkstream threatens Hungary Sovereignty – MFA – World

Budapest, March 2. /Tass /. Hungary sees Ukraine attack against the infrastructure of the Turkstream gas pipe as an attack on his sovereignty, said Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto, after a telephone conversation with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov.

“My Russian colleague Sergey Lavrov told me on the phone that during the night, a Ukrainian drone had attacked the Russkaya station, an important compressor station of the Turkish gas pipe.

“Energy security is a matter of sovereignty, so such attacks should be seen as an attack on sovereignty. The European Commission has recently issued a guarantee that Ukraine would not go to the infrastructure of the gas portfolio that leads to the European Union, so we urge the European Commission to immediately clarify its guarantees,” said the Minister Hungarian.

In February, Hungary received guarantees for its energy security from the European Commission. They cover the negotiations with Ukraine on the resumption of Russian gas traffic to central Europe, the continuation of the Russian oil traffic through the Druzhba pipe and non -aggression by the Ukrainian armed forces against the Turkstream pipe, which delivers Russia fuel to Hungary. Hungary has limited compliance with these requirements for the extension of EU sanctions against Russia, as well as the launch of conversations with Ukraine about their adhesion to the association.

Hungary continues to receive most gases under long -term contracts with Gazprom through the Turkstream pipe and its branches through Bulgaria and Serbia. According to Hungary estimates, this amounted to 5.6 billion cubic meters in 2023, while in 2024 it reached a 7.6 billion cubic meters record.

The Russian Foreign Ministry declared on Saturday that Lavrov informed its Hungarian counterpart about the attempt of terrorist attack of Ukraine against Turkstream infrastructure. The conversation took place in the initiative of the Hungarian side. During the night of February 28, kyiv once again tried to attack the station ensuring gas supply through Turkstream. The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that Ukrainian forces used three UAV in the attack. The drones were shot down at a safe distance from the station.
