Sergio García signs a new partner at LIV Golf

Sergio García has a new LIV Golf teammate.

The former Masters champion confirmed on January 10 that his Fireballs team had signed the sought-after young Spaniard Luis Masaveu.

Masaveu, 22, only turned professional last October after an impressive amateur career that saw him reach the semifinals of the 2024 US Amateur.

He also made the cut at the 2024 Open at Royal Troon and was the low amateur at the Spanish Open in Madrid.

Masaveu replaces Eugenio Chacarra at the Fireballs after Garcia decided to offload the 24-year-old at the end of last year’s campaign.

Former PGA Tour pro Abraham Ancer and rising talent David Puig are the other two players for the Fireballs.

Garcia said he was very excited about his potential, adding: “He’s a great kid and a wonderful player.

“Obviously it’s his first year as a professional and to come and play with the big guys, I think it will be a good learning experience.

“But the three of us, not just myself but Abraham and David, will be there to support him, encourage him and make sure he can enjoy his game and play the way he knows how to play.”

Masaveu said he had been watching Garcia since he was a kid at the Ryder Cup and the Masters.

“I’m really happy to be here and I’m going to try to learn as much as I can from him,” Masaveu said.

LIV Golf’s third full campaign begins in Saudi Arabia, Riyadh, next month.

The news follows speculation that Jon Rahm has also contacted Rory McIlroy’s protégé Tom McKibbin.
