The post soon went viral and was reposted by many prominent Chinese actors, such as singer Lay Zhang and actor Qin Lan. The viral post soon forced officials to register a case and just two days after the post, Wang Xin was rescued from a scam center across the border on January 7.
Police Inspector General Thatchai Pitaneelaboot informed the media that Wang XIn was lured to Myanmar under the pretext of a casting, but when he was arrested he was trained to defraud other Chinese citizens. The police inspector also verified that Wang was not abused or assaulted. While Wang Xin’s rescue sparked widespread relief, it also raised concerns about the fate of thousands of people still trapped in similar facilities.

According to the BBC, families of Chinese nationals believed to be held in these complexes have launched a petition urging their government to intervene. The petition, shared online, allows people to report cases of missing loved ones. The number of reported cases has increased from 174 initially to more than 600 and continues to rise.
In a video broadcast by Beijing News, the rescued actor reported that there were around 50 Chinese citizens where he was detained. He described his horrific experience in more detail, saying: “It wasn’t until the gunmen pushed me into the car that I realized that maybe I was not in Thailand, but in another country. There were about 50 people in the building I was in. There were more in another building and people were coming from different countries.” However, the details of how the actor was rescued have not yet been made public, raising suspicions about the entire operation.
