The actress, 53, admitted she originally “passed up” the opportunity to compete on the second season of Fox’s bootcamp-style reality show before agreeing to join the cast of the upcoming third season.

“It was an opportunity to do something I had never done before, very challenging and completely out of my comfort zone,” he shared during an interview with MY! News. “It’s like nothing I’ve ever done before and I was really scared to do it. I actually skipped season 2 because I watched season 1 and I was like ‘there’s no way.'”

She added: “And then (I’m) grateful that they asked me for season 3, but it was a challenge.”

Despite his initial reservations, he learned that “I’m stronger than I thought,” adding, “But I wish I was stronger.”

“I learned that when you set out to do something, even if you go as far as you can, at least try,” he said. “I think that’s something that’s also important for my kids to see.”

Although the program can teach The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills the student’s daughters – Sami, 20 years old, Lola, 19 and Eloise, 13 – an important lesson, they weren’t “very happy” that Richards agreed to do the show.

While Richards was “in the gym every day” for three weeks before the show, she shared that her daughters had doubts about the competition, explaining, “My daughters were terrified. They didn’t want me to do it. “They (thought) maybe I wasn’t going to make it home.”

Richards previously told PEOPLE that His daughters were “very upset” when he signed on for season 3.

“They didn’t want me to do it,” he recalled. “They were afraid I would be hurt or killed, and they were actually very angry. It was the first time of all the times I did different projects or traveled, they were very upset with me.”

Still, Richards says she was up to the task and ready to push beyond her comfort zone.

“I’m not athletic at all; everyone bullied me a lot,” she shared. “I didn’t know who was going to be there, but I heard there were some athletes and I can’t compete with that. But that’s also the best thing, it’s not about competing against anyone but myself, and that’s why we get stripped down, physically, mentally, emotionally, and all that.”

“I thought, ‘This is the most challenging thing I’ll ever do, and why not do it?’” he continued. “I was terrified, but once I committed to doing it, I was there.”
