South Georgia District Attorney Files Motion to Intervene in Bainbridge Monkey Facility Development Case

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – A South Georgia district attorney has filed a motion to intervene in plans to build a Bainbridge Monkey Breeding and Research Center.

The company behind the facility, Safer Human Medicine, is trying to enforce an agreement it made with Decatur County leaders.

In the filing, South Georgia Circuit District Attorney Joseph Mulholland asked to intervene in the company’s breach of contract lawsuit against county officials.

More news from South Georgia:

Mulholland argued that the company claims it has the right to enforce certain contracts against multiple public entities, including the Decatur-Bainbridge County Industrial Development Authority.

When it comes to the project, Mulholland said in court papers that the company and officials at the Decatur-Bainbridge County Industrial Development Authority, “have planned to obtain a favorable order from this court so that the authority can, in essence, shrink shoulder and say that he had no choice but to move on.”

In a news release, officials with PETA, a nonprofit animal rights organization, said they applaud Mulholland’s motion to intervene.
