Manchester United legend Paul Scholes disagrees with Ruben Amorim that Joshua Zirkzee made the right decision to move on to Harry Maguire in the closing stages of their 2-2 draw against Liverpool.
Cody Gakpo quickly canceled out Lisandro Martínez’s opener with a beautiful run and finished in the 59th minute before Mohamed Salah put Liverpool ahead 2-1 with 20 minutes remaining.
But Manchester United showed excellent character draw thanks to Amad Diallo and could have won it with seconds left if Maguire had finished off a chance inside the area.
Zirkzee had the chance to shoot past the goalkeeper, but opted to send the ball to centre-back Maguire, who fired the ball well over the crossbar.
When asked if Zirkzee should have shot instead of passing the ball to his Manchester United teammate, Amorim replied: “For me, I think it was the perfect decision because he can shoot but he put the ball more in the center.
“The ball took a long time to score for Harry, but sometimes you can’t do it. But, in my opinion, Josh made a good decision.”
But Manchester United legend Scholes disagreed, he said. Premier League productions: “It could have been (a great moment) for him.
“We were talking before about Diego Forlán, he was in a very similar situation. Forlán couldn’t score a goal for United and he scores there and will be a great hero forever.
“It was that finish, that side of the pitch and it’s the only thing I thought about, scoring the winning goal at Anfield.
“Zirkzee had a great opportunity to do it. He’ll probably look back and think, “Well, I probably made the wrong decision,” but he’s a player who lacks confidence.
“He’s been dragged after half an hour (against Newcastle), his chin is on the ground and he arrives at Anfield in a really difficult place.
“He’s in a really good position, he makes a great run, he hits a great ball and you think, ‘Come on, this is for you!’, and he didn’t take full advantage of it.
“But I hope there are opportunities in the future where I’ll probably change my mind.”

On his performance at Anfield, Scholes added about Manchester United’s performance: “It was a proper performance today. Go to Anfield and go head to head with the best team…
“They beat Manchester City, who have been the best team for four or five years, but that performance was nothing like this. This was better.
“I know they didn’t win the game like they did at City, but I get more out of that performance than winning against the champions.
“I think that’s the plan, that’s the way they move forward, that’s the standard.
“At this point, the coach should know his players. He has cut and changed a lot and this has to be (close to his strongest team).
“Who else can participate? Luke Shaw, possibly if he is fit. Leny Yoro as center back, Alejandro Garnacho, possibly, but I don’t think he’ll get it completely.
“If that starting eleven is fit, then they will have to play until the players perform poorly and don’t make the team.
“That is the standard they have set and they have to reach it in the next games. “I don’t see any reason why they can’t do it.”
