Pembrokeshire: Newport businesses fear trade will be hit by eight-week roadworks

Work will begin on Monday and will remain underway until at least February 28.

And although the longer detour only applies to vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, councilor Huw Murphy, who represents the town on Pembrokeshire council, said businesses were concerned about the effect of the work.

He said: “The problem for us is that in Newport there are no easy detour routes.

“The highway will be closed but Newport will not be. I think it will have an impact on the local economy.”

He added that the city is heavily dependent on tourism, hospitality and leisure and that there is a “real risk” it will “fall”.
