People in flooded areas receive weather radios in Harlan County

HARLAN COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) – Harlan County Emergency Management received a grant to distribute weather radios to people living in flood zones.

Harlan County Emergency Management installed the weather radios. If bad weather occurs, the radio will turn off, alerting the owner of a storm in the area.

“It’s more for human life, that’s what we focus on than property, but it gives them advance warning so they know,” said Harlan County Emergency Management Director Stephen Lewis.

He said many people in the area have to live on floodplains because they don’t have much flat land to build on.

“People have to live on the floodplains, more or less, in this area,” Lewis said.

Organizers used the federal floodplain map to determine which areas would receive the radios first. On Friday, 62 radios were delivered.

Lewis said there would be two more days of delivery for other areas. In total, 384 radios will be delivered to people in Harlan County.
