The mayor of Letterkenny and Milford, Gerry McMonagle, said the incident had left a dark cloud over the local community.
“People resulted in the vigil and people were visibly surprised,” North West Today of the BBC Radio Foyle told the BBC Radio Radio.
“There is simply a true sense of disbelief that something like this happened: last night there was a silence stunned in vigil and it is very difficult to assume.”
McMonagle said Anthony Gallagher was a very dear Lollipop man in a local school.
“I am sure that children, since they return to school today, will miss him already all the teachers and friends of the city.”
The organizers of the San Patricio Day Parade published on social networks that it was with “deep repentance” that the event would have been canceled.
They said that the decision was made after consulting with Gardaí, since the route of the parade was directly affected and that it was “impossible to proceed as planned.”
