The police operation points to predators on departure nights

A police operation aimed at “predatory behavior” in a coastal city at night has led to a crime reduction, they said officers and publicans.

The North Yorkshire police said that their specialized team of officers for the surveillance of the project had patrold the city center of Scarborough since December 2023 during the peak hours for the party attendees.

Supt Rachel Wood said that the officers deployed, both in uniform and simple clothes, were trained to detect “potential victims”, but also people who show “predatory behavior” in an attempt to intervene and prevent sexual violence.

Supt Wood said the Scarborough operation had led to 23 arrests and 68 “interventions” since it began.

She added: “We have had a series of positive protection references that have entered and have seen a reduction in crime and antisocial behavior since we have been executing it.

“People should feel sure that these patrols are taking place.”

Ryan Mancrief, from Scarborough Pub the Waterhouse, said the police presence in its place had helped deter antisocial behavior.

He said that his place also worked with the officers as part of the scheme requested by Angela, that encourages customers to approach the bar staff and use the “Angela” Codeword to indicate that they are in potential danger.

“We involve the street angels or the police and ensure that this vulnerable person is protected,” added Mancrief.

The force also has the surveillance patrols of the project in the center of the city of York, reflecting what has become a national operation First launched in 2019.

The officers deployed also help people find a safe way home, find their friends if they separate or refer them to partner services, such as Night Angels or Yorkshire ambulance service, the force added.

Supt Wood said it was also important for spectators “to trust their instincts” and inform the behavior that “does not seem correct.”

“As insignificant that he believes that something can be, please denounce it, because his actions could save lives,” he said.
