‘Survived that’ – the moment of terrifying races of Martin Brundle occurred in the Australian Grand Prix

Martin Brundle has admitted that his infamous walks of the network leave him terrified, but pales compared to an experience as a driver.

The corridor turned into a Broadcastr regularly serves a car on the track with his sometimes uncomfortable network walks, but an incident in Australia hit too close to home.

During an exclusive interview with Talksport last year, former Brundle Mark Blundell teammate He said he is underestimated as a driver.

And so he proved to be in the street circuit of Adelaide in 1989 when the legend of F1 Aryton Senna, on the path of war, ran into the back of him.

In the scenes described by the legendary commentator of motor racing, Murray Walker, as Senna “attacks him as Jaws,” Brundle still has nightmares about the fierce collision more than three decades later.

He told his Behind the steering wheel Podcast: “My most scary experience in motoring is quite easy to decide, in reality, and that would be Adelaide 1989.

“I am driving for Brabham in the Pirelli tires, the cars are going well, and there were 39 cars in formula one at that time, extraordinarily, and only 26 would begin the race. So popular was and how competitive it was.

“But it rained the day of the race and we had some extra practice. There had been a lot of uproar because Senna and (Alain) prost had stumbled for each other in the previous race in Suzuka and Senna disqualified.

“I was angry. Prost was effectively the new world champion in McLarenBut he went to Ferrari.

“Senna was staying in McLaren. McLaren protested the result on the basis that they had lost a victory in the race that day after Senna was disqualified and Nannini won by Benetton. And there we were then in the next and last race of the season and Senna was on a mission. It could still be the world champion, in reality, if they won the appeal, it was probably not going to be.

“Prost didn’t want to start the race. I was anxious for, along with other drivers as well. I was throwing it. A lot of discussion about the grid.

“(Ex CEO of F1) Bernie Ecclestone He walked and said, climb to the car. The race is starting. And we all did. Prost stopped at the end of the first round.

“Then there was a great derivation and was counting red. He ordered all that, (and) restarted. My little Brabham is going very well, but the Pirelli tires were not as good in the big puddles with Aquaplaing like the good years that others were running. Or many of the others.

“But they were very good in other aspects. So I’m going to go down the back, running well inside the top 10. I am having a good race in Top Gear, flat. There is a small right corner at the end.
The famous where (Nigel) Mansell had the blowout in 1986 and lost the world championship there. And two thirds of the road on the line, my car got up.

“At the top of the water, I am flat in Top Gear and I start turning. I somehow turned directly in the middle of the track.

“I didn’t hit either wall. In a spray ball, I knew there were many Formula one cars behind me and wanted to get in motion. To put it on the first march and start driving. And then I couldn’t exercise because I didn’t know exactly how many times I had turned around if I headed towards Formula One or with them cars.
But I knew I had to move on. So I followed the rhythm of the wall, with grimaces in case something put me straight, and I’m still in the race. And then I saw the brake boards and numbers were on my side.

“And then I knew he was in the right direction. I accelerated. He survived that. Senna was in a mission.

“He had already had a multiple turn and also stayed out of the wall just before the last corner of the return. And he moved away nine seconds in the first round. The team was with him, apparently saying: Reduce speed, decrease speed. You are winning for miles.

“Next time in the Strait of Brabham, I am in fifth march because I was not in sixth place. I am like half, three quarters of the accelerator, just trying not to aquaplane again and overcome that phase of the race. And suddenly I felt this massive influence on the back. And then Senna passed me by three wheels.

“I will never forget it. I can imagine it right now. Unfortunately, my car also broke. He removed the rear wing and damaged the right rear suspension in the Brabham.

“I was out of the race and me too, and there was a camera in the back of my car and it was like the jaws that came to me. So clearly I couldn’t see anything, because my rear camera could not see it until it hit me. And the cameras tend to see better in those conditions than in the human eye.

“So it was now on a mission that Senna was now. Anger was that the race was removed from the previous race when he and Prost had that fight in the Chicana final in Suzuka.

“Then, that moment, when I hooked the first march and left, when I did not know if I was driving the Formula One or with them cars, it is certainly the terrifying thing that has happened to me.”

In these days, 35 years later, Brundle is still terrified every race weekend in the main line: interviewing celebrities on the network.

“I am terrified of everything because it is live and it is just a pure television of car accidents.

“And then I know some really charming, fascinating and class people, politicians and stars of royalty and cinema, and I am very privileged with the people I know in the network.”
