Kansas City, MO.-The expansion of the Crime Strategies Unit of the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office seeks to improve public safety through “innovative and data-based approaches.”

Three prosecutors will be appointed for the unit dedicated to assuming a “more proactive role in the analysis of crime data” and managing cases of criminals with “extensive criminal records and high risk of violent and serious criminal activity,” according to the prosecutor’s office.

At a press conference on Monday, the Melesa Prosecutor Johnson explained that the vision is that the unit is to “track repeated criminals, identify patterns (and) to ensure that repeat offenders are responsible.”

“Allowing us to connect the points between incidents and recognize when we are dealing with series criminals. This will not only help us build strong cases that lead to appropriate changes, but will inspire long -term behavioral changes, ”said Johnson.

He explained that real estate crimes often “erode confidence” and “undermine the sense of security that all residents in Jackson County deserve.”

Therefore, the objective of the unit is to be strategic to identify those “who are causing the greatest damage in our community.”

Ben Cox, an assistant to chief of the crime strategies unit, said the crimes reviewed range from gang murders to minor crimes.

“The lower level crimes, when they do the repeat offenders to the same people, can also have a significant impact. Our unit will deal with all kinds of crimes like that, ”said Cox.

He said that specific people will include those who have committed two or more serious crimes or three or more minor crimes against a single business, person or community.

“We can work with the victims and the police to ensure that there are enough evidence to accuse these high -impact criminals, then we will communicate with the court on why these people should remain in jail,” he said.

Together with the three prosecutors assigned to the unit, CSU will be associated with Save KC, the prosecutor’s office, the interns of the University of Missouri-Kansas City, data analysts and a link of the Kansas City Police Department, Missouri.

With the help of neighborhood groups and community participation, the unit is confident that it can ensure that “violent criminals are effectively prosecuted.”

“Kansas City is fed up with armed violence in our streets and the prolific criminals of real estate crimes that decrease our quality of life,” said Claire Wyatt, an assistant lawyer of the prosecutor.
