Gynecologist abused patients and used insanite equipment, prosecutors say

A gynecologist in Memphis who reused unhealthy equipment in his patients was arrested on Friday and accused of sexually abusing patients for five years and benefiting from insurance fraud, according to federal prosecutors and judicial records.

The gynecologist, Sanjeev Kumar, 44, persuaded four victims to travel to Tennessee from other states to participate in “illegal sexual activity,” according to an accusation.

Dr. Kumar also conducted dozens of unnecessary medical tests and accused them of the medical and Medicare government programs, according to the accusation.

“The accusations indicate that Kumar acred said in a statement.

Between September 2019 and June 2024, Dr. Kumar was the best paid supplier in the state of Medicare and Medicaid hysteroscopy biopsies, according to the accusation. Hysteroscopy is a procedure that uses a thin and illuminated tube inserted in a woman’s vagina to allow a doctor to observe the cervix and the uterus, According to the Cleveland Clinic.

According to the accusation, Dr. Kumar “benefited substantially” from the billing of Medicare and Medicaid for these procedures. Dr. Kumar invoiced the insurance agencies $ 2,515 each time for more than 40 procedures that were considered fraudulent or not medically necessary, but it was not immediately clear how much personally benefited from those transactions.

Dr. Kumar ordered his personnel to treat each patient as a critic, according to the accusation, which meant that each new patient underwent a Pap larger, ultrasound and hysteroscopy test, regardless of the treatment they were looking for.

In the course of treatment, Dr. Kumar constantly reused the equipment that was marked as “unique use”, properly cleaning and disinfecting the equipment among patients.

Then he announced Medicare and Medicaid for each visit to the patient as if he had used single -use equipment, despite reusing it, according to the accusation.

During this time, Dr. Kumar also forced four victims to travel to his Memphis clinic, where they dedicated themselves to “sexual activity by which a person can be accused of a criminal offense,” said the accusation. The victims traveled to Memphis “on multiple occasions,” according to federal prosecutors.

The Federal Research Office is looking to identify more victims and has asked the public for any information about Dr. Kumar, which he practiced at the Avenue Poplar Clinic in Memphis.

The phone rang without response at the clinic on Saturday and its website seemed to have been withdrawn. There was no lawyer to appear for the doctor in judicial documents and it was not clear immediately if she had legal representation. If you are guilty, Dr. Kumar faces up to 31 years in prison and more than $ 500,000 in possible fines.

“This doctor put profits ahead of patients,” said Joseph E. Carrico, a special agent of the FBI Nashville field, in a statement. “The abusive behavior alleged here took place for more than five years, which means that there could be many victims of which we have not had news.”
