Shops and restaurants on Regent Street were evacuated at around 2pm today as police investigated a “suspicious vehicle”.

Spectators were asked to remain behind a police cordon that had been set up near the Royal Academy.

Once the area was evacuated, the Metropolitan Police intervened to carry out a series of controlled explosions near the vehicle.

The car window was shattered during the explosion, carried out as a “precautionary measure.”

A witness told The Standard: ‘They evacuated the entire street and are carrying out a controlled explosion.

Metropolitan Police officers swarmed the iconic Mayfair Street and cordoned off it along with nearby New Burlington Street as they investigated the potential threat.

Footage posted on social media shows frightened shoppers fleeing the area, as numerous alarms ring out around them.

“There was just a loud bang and the police are moving everyone away.”

Another Regent Street worker said: “We heard a lot of sirens and a bomb squad vehicle arrived.”

The iconic shopping street is particularly busy this month as people flock to the area for the January sales.

But a video posted online showed the streets completely deserted following today’s evacuation, with the caption: “I’m still in the Regent Street office.” Very disturbing. I heard at least one explosion.

Firefighters have also been seen at the scene supporting the police. It is understood that normal operations should return soon.

A spokesperson for The Met said: “There are road closures in the vicinity of Regent Street and New Burlington Street while officers investigate a suspicious vehicle.”
