Kansas City, MO.-A 20-year-old man reached a guilt agreement on Thursday with Clay County prosecutors in relation to the March 2024 shooting who injured two people outside the North Kansas City high school.

As part of the guilt agreement, prosecutors said they plan to ask the judge to sentence Smallwood to 19 years in prison. The agreement allows Smallwood and his lawyers to argue a minor sentence.
Smallwood and his younger brother, Lavon’dre Smallwood, were both Originally loaded With armed criminal action and two charges of illegal use of a weapon in relation to the shooting.
Clay County fiscal lawyer, Zachary Thompson, said last March that the shooting began after a dispute between two groups of young people who came out of a basketball game of Missouri District Class 6 between Staley and North Kansas City.

“I was shot and replied that I understood that it was reckless to do it in a multitude of people,” wrote Michael Smallwood in the guilt agreement.
Michael Smallwood also admitted to having a gun with him in a school.
The judge in the case ordered a sentence evaluation report and established the sentence date for May 23, 2025.
The criminal case against Lavon’dre Smallwood is still ongoing. On February 13, 2025, a conference prior to the trial was held. A jury trial has been tentatively scheduled by December 2025.
