Residents of a wealthy California neighborhood were left terrified after thieves ransacked their condominiums while fumigating them.

The raids occurred inside the Del Ray Plaza complex in Playa del Rey, while it was roofed and fumigated from December 11 to 13.

The homeowners association promised residents of the building, located on the west side of Los Angeles, 24-hour security.

Despite this, thieves ransacked 23 units out of a total of 39, taking cash, jewelry and other valuables, leaving the empty houses in disarray.

‘We have 23 doors that have been destroyed. We have places that have been looted like you have no idea,” said resident Loren Brown, who spoke with KTLA News.

Brown added: “The money is gone and the guns are gone. The people who were here knew what they were doing.

‘They were wearing respirators. This doesn’t seem organic. For me, this is somewhat an inside job.

Several people reported seeing lights on inside the building during the fumigation, even though residents were told to turn them off before leaving the premises.

“That was the first clue,” Brown added. “But we thought we had 24-hour security guards, that everything was being watched and everything was fine.”

He was seen walking slowly around the dark apartment while equipped with a flashlight, apparently searching for things he deemed worth taking.

Carol Fontaine, president of the building’s Homeowners Association, was one of the victims of the massive robbery.

When she returned to her unit on Friday, she found a broken front door, a vandalized bedroom, and a destroyed closet: her personal belongings were found scattered all over the floors instead of in the spaces where she left them.

She said: ‘It’s quite devastating for a lot of us. 24 hour security was ordered and we patrolled outside and then I got a call from the termite company saying we had had break-ins. “All floors were hit.”

The robbers escaped with several of their valuables, including jewelry and ammunition.

Residents wondered how thieves could have spent so much time stealing and vandalizing their luxury building without anyone noticing.

As of this month, the average rent in Playa Del Rey is $2,461 – 58 percent higher than the national average – making it one of the most expensive cities in the United States. Apartments.com reported.

Residents are also now working closely with authorities as investigators try to gather evidence of the thefts.

The terrifying robberies come just five months after another nearby condo complex was plagued by suspicious fires.

Marina City Club, which is located in the nearby wealthy community of Marina del Rey, is just a ten-minute drive from where the robberies took place.

The building experienced a series of alleged arson attacks this summer, leading to fire trucks and bright lights becoming a normal occurrence for its residents.

“We have a fire like once a week, and this has been going on since May,” Teri Hirano, a longtime resident of the building, told NBC Los Angeles in July.

The fires were said to have been started by the use of toilet paper and other combustible materials.
