United star told to take part of the blame after another Onana mistake as Hojlund’s rescue act avoids blushes

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana made another big mistake in the Europa League comeback win over Viktoria Plzen, but Owen Hargreaves believes a defensive teammate was also to blame.

Unlike his mistake in the defeat to Nottingham Forest, Onana’s mistake against Plzen in the Czech Republic did not cost him dearly, as two goals from substitute Rasmus Hojlund gave the Red Devils a 2-1 victory.

Onana’s mistake against Forest was 100 percent his fault, but the former Manchester United Midfielder Hargreaves believes centre-back Matthijs de Ligt could have helped the United goalkeeper more in Plzen’s goal.

Onana He gave the ball to Plzen to score, and Hargreaves believed that De Ligt should have helped him by offering him a better passing option, saying: “Both André Onana and Matthijs de Ligt could be to blame there, but Onana a little more so.

“De Ligt didn’t really want the ball. In the end, Onana makes a bad pass. But Rubén Amorim wants his centre-backs to come in and receive the ball.

“De Ligt does not feel comfortable receiving it on the turn and Onana plays a poor ball and from the wrong side.

“It’s a difficult position for a center back, (but) if the coach tells you to do something, you’re going to do it.”

Fernandes jumps to Onana’s defense

Bruno Fernandes hugged André Onana after the Manchester United goalkeeper was found guilty of Viktoria Plzen’s first goal on Thursday night.

talking to TNT SportsFernandes said after the match: “We want to play from the back and everyone knows that, so we have to make the right decision on the field.

“André (Onana) thought that Matta (De Ligt) could catch the ball but he missed and they scored a goal.

“It’s not about Andre making the mistake, here we don’t look at people when something happens on the wrong side.

“We have great confidence in him. He knows he made a mistake because he is an intelligent guy, he is going to help us many times and we trust his qualities with the ball.

“Mistakes are part of football. If they don’t happen, then the goals don’t happen. But we did well to show the resilience to come back and find victory.”

Speaking after the match, United manager Amorim focused on the result rather than Onana’s howl, adding: “We improved during the match. We controlled the game in the first half, but without great chances.

“We lacked speed and movement and we did not control the ball because the field was difficult to connect with the forwards. Viktoria didn’t have a chance either.

“In the second half we gave away a goal but we reacted well. We pushed the opponent into their own half and managed to score. “The victory is important right now and it is good to prepare for the next game.”
