Parked cars blocking roads in Belfast could be prosecuted

DUP councilor Ruth Brooks says a letter has been sent to residents on some of the worst affected streets informing them of the plan and reminding them to park “considerately”.

“If it is not resolved, we will look to the Department of Infrastructure and the PSNI to do their part and take action,” he says.

She told BBC News NI that some narrower streets that would traditionally have had one or two cars, may now have several cars per household.

“As a result, residents can’t always park in front of their homes and that’s causing problems; commuters are also arriving on residential streets because that’s where the bus routes can reach; these things have a knock-on impact.”

Brooks says residents also get upset when their bins go missing on a regular basis.

“Inconsiderate parking is one of the biggest problems that is causing garbage trucks to miss the streets,” he said.

“The council has no enforcement powers; it cannot force residents to park their cars correctly.”
